BOOK EDITING. BOOK RESEARCH.

Although A.I has made leaps and bounds in research, there are some things that A.I can not do and that is have a subjective point of view.

Humans still have to provide the correct context.

Jason Bainbridge graduated as a Director and Script Writer, and get’s involved in other forms of writing and content creation, as well.

With his first book editing project under his belt, he has the experience that comes with first projects and lessons learned.

He has had to write a great variety of copies and documents for several different projects including script rewriting from 1st, 2nd and 3rd drafts to final drafts.

However, faster research has made writing services more competitive and we are there to provide this service. In conjunction with human opinion.

SERVICE. EXPECTATIONS.

Not just a spell checker. What kind of project is it?

Many authors mistakenly believe that a book editor’s role is limited to correcting spelling and punctuation.

However, the responsibilities of a book editor extend far beyond that. While proofreading and rectifying grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors are indeed part of their job, a book editor also serves as a fact checker and a manuscript doctor.

It is important to note that there are different levels and types of book editors.

 Copyeditor:
A copyeditor focuses on reviewing the text and ensuring accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

We read the entire manuscript, paying attention to consistency, redundancy, flow, transitions, and proper word usage. Maintaining the appropriate tense and tone throughout the book is also within their purview.

Additionally, copyeditors may offer suggestions or copywriting to facilitate smooth transitions between thoughts.

Some copyeditors are even tasked with fact-checking statistics and sources for accuracy.

Copyeditors excel at eliminating confusion, enhancing clarity, and ensuring that the reader remains engaged. We possess the ability to maintain the author’s style and tone while enhancing and polishing the manuscript.

Developmental Editor:
In contrast to the copyeditor, the developmental editor is involved in the writing process, sometimes even before the author begins writing the book.

Developmental editing encompasses the overall development and organization of the book, including the characters, storyline, and pacing.

The developmental editor often provides recommendations regarding the chapter order, content, flow, and arrangement of the text.

Once the developmental editor completes their work, the manuscript should be ready to be handed over to a copyeditor.

Is both editing roles necessary? Not necessarily. You may only require the services of a copyeditor. Depending on your writing skills, you may need different levels of copy editing, ranging from basic to heavy line editing, and occasionally even ghostwriting.

Editorial Fees:
The fees charged by book editors in the market vary depending on the type of editing required.

The following rates are related to the type of complexity related to the subject matter, the latter is more complex research checking from the source interviewee if required.

  • Basic copyediting: $25 to $40 per hour, with a pace of 5 to 10 pages per hour.
  • Heavy copyediting: $35 to $50 per hour, with a pace of 2 to 5 pages per hour.
  • Substantive editing (also known as line editing): $40 to $65 per hour, with a pace of 1 to 6 pages per hour.
  • Developmental editing: $50 to $80 per hour, with a pace of 2 to 5 pages per hour.

It’s important to note that rates can vary among book editors. Some freelance editors may work for $10 to $20 per hour, but experienced book editors typically charge $25 or more per hour.

*Technical writing or specialized subject matter may command higher rates.

Considering a book editor as an expense, is crucial when budgeting for writing and publishing your book.

Their expertise often makes the difference between an average book and an exceptional one.

If you desire a book that enhances your credibility, it is recommended to engage the services of an experienced book editor who can polish your work and make it the best it can be.

When it comes to research work that is also in the $25 – $40 region, depending on the complexity.

Jason is very interested in how things work and loves research, however, sometimes costs to website sources or local travel related to the research must be calculated in, as well as the regular consultation times.

If the client wants Jason to travel to another country for the research, then the fee will include those upfront costs.

Why some fees seem high:
There will be lot of consultation involved with you, the Author, and that is also calculated into the fee. There will be many long phone calls or zoom meetings and that time must be recuperated to reflect the entire value proposition.

Jason can sit down with the initial consultation free, and then review the tasks required to complete your book’s journey to the publisher.
Then, design a quotation based on the expected tasks involved.

It is also important to note, that we now  handle the publishing side of the book, first starting with the eBook version and then helping you decide on your Paper or hard back release.
